Powering Global Trade Relations
India—UK FT A: A Milestone for the Tech Sector
The India—UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), finalized on May 6, 2025, marks a
maior step in strengthening bilateral trade ties. The UK is India's second-largest
export market for tech, while India is the UK's second-largest investor, with the
technology sector at the heart of this partnership.
We played a key role in shaping the agreement, particularly in securing the
inclusion of the Double Contribution Convention (DCC)- a long-pending industry
demand. This provision exempts Indian professionals in the UK from social security
contributions for up to three years, saving GBP 300—400 million annually and
benefiting nearly 60,000 employees.
The FTA also reduces tariffs on most goods, streamlines procurement access, and
improves provisions on digital services and mobility. We are grateful to Shri Piyush
Goyal, Honourable Minister of Commerce and Industry, and all negotiators for
their efforts in achieving this important outcome. Implementation is expected
within the next 15 months, following legal procedures in both countries.
